Bought this in 1980 when I was 15. Never found anyone that would fathom playing it with me. I stored it on a heavy wood board under my bed because I had no room for it with my large family and little bedroom space. It got destroyed by my little brother after I left for the Army and came back noticing my game storage closet was too curious for him to not tear into. This is the game I felt is the way I grade other games by. This game RULES!!! Never played it with another person, never played it since 1984. Doesn't matter at all. It is the best game by far!!! Yes! It is easy to teach once you know it. Replayability is fantastic. BUT, it is a mess! Please someone make a computer version like what was done with Talisman. Talisman actually can be played on a phone now!!!! (I will have to look up this Realmspeak thing you mentioned) Never had the chance to teach it to my little brother cause he got at it when I was away in the Army. I miss it so much and am looking for a game that can come close to it? This game creator must have been a genius? If anybody around Ohio owns it, and plays it, let me know?

Frostpunk I reckon is a very complicated game to learn, I'd be interested in your take on that. Not only is it complicated it's then very difficult to win.

My wife and I learned the original game in early 80's on a second honeymoon, using the phased intro rule book that came with the game. Later we taught our growing family and eventually, a couple of the kids loved the game and became experts. The kids have grown and moved on, but I still treasure my original copy (along with all the updated rules and related isues of The General) and have an opened but unpunched copy that I look at selling, but just can't part with.

Actually 4 me the map and the theme were what hooked me! Love it!

I use translucent blue cubes for aqua, it works so much better!

The Pax Renaissance box is so good, they run out of boxes before running out of the game at Essen. Thus, I only have the game, not the box.

I got this game when I was 12 years old new. None of my friends would play it because of it's complexity so I just shelved the game. Now that I'm in my 50's, maybe I'll give it another go.

When I punched my copy I used 8 counter trays and an extra box. Most of the counters are informational, and most of the others broke down divisions into regiments and brigades and then into battalions. Yes, there are some companies, such as security companies to guard airfields.

I’ve owned “Magic Realm” since it first came out in 1979 and only have gotten it to the table a handful of times. There are mechanics in MR which I’ve never found in any other board game and I still think it’s one of the best games ever created, but the rule book has always intimidated me,?even though I have the 2nd and 3rd edition rule books as well as the first. One of these days I’m going to give it a lot of attention.

A new version has been released by the original creator after another successful Kickstarter campaign. Apparently it plays better than the original. Hope it will be on general release in the US and Europe once the KS backers have received their copies.

Did we play the same game? My friends had no troubles fulfilling their objectives, and nothing could prevent them from doing so, meanwhile I had an imposible time and came last in scoring. My scoring required other players to perform crime, but neither of their characters ever needed to to do so. They fully focused on their objectives, none which interfered with anyone else, and there was pretty much nothing that could be done to prevent that. So my first game of this left me rather disappointed. I guess the more players the better the odds people have objectives that intersect. I played this 3 player. Perhaps the addition of AI could help to make things more complicated.

RE: Manager of Shipping not having a lot to do: They have almost total control over what regions ships are in and which ships get fitted. This effectively gives them a huge amount of power over other player's income. If the MoS moves all of the ships to the West, then the Presidents of Madras and Bengal have no way to trade which makes their Presidencies almost worthless. If the MoS insists on blowing company funds on temporary ships instead of fitting yours, you lose out on $1 per turn per ship. If the MoS moves ships away from where the Chairman just allocated funds to conduct trade, they basically doom the company to bankruptcy. All of this means the MoS is a great position if you want to extort the other players for cash or if you want to inflate the value of your own presidency or writers.

My dad would likely agree it is not that hard to teach he tought it to 9 year old me in the early 80s. One of my vanity projects is to recreate it, with minitures

Around 26:00, you mention that launch failure is 5%. Don't forget that in 3.3.5, it states, "For CVs (even when launching on an LV), subtract the CV size from your engine failure rate. For example, at the start of the game, a CV-2 would have an engine failure rate of 5-2=3%."
